RJI funds promising start-up, Circulate

The Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI), the Associated Press (AP) and other investors recently unveiled a new for-profit start-up, CircLabs.  Based in Palo Alto, CircLabs’ first product, code-named Circulate, is a proprietary tool to help publishers get paid for what they offer on-site.

“Circulate will enhance the user’s Web browsing experience while it creates new revenue streams for content producers,” says Jeff Vander Clute, president of the new venture. “Circulate can adapt to any payment model, from subscription fees to per-item pricing.  But more than that, the Circulate design is user-centric in a way that sets it apart from other products being explored today.”

CircLab’s founders are veteran journalists and news technologists. In addition to Vander Clute the collaboration includes Martin Langeveld, executive vice president; Joe Bergeron, vice president, product development; Bill Densmore, co-founder.

The Circulate concept evolved from work done by Bill Densmore during his 2008-2009 Fellowship year at RJI.  “It’s urgent that we find a sustainable business model for journalism,” says Densmore.  “Circulate combines social networking, intelligent filtering and subscription management. But more than that, Circulate actually learns from the user’s online behavior to put the Web browsing experience on steroids.”
